Behind the Scenes

How We Engrave: A Look Inside the Workshop

15 January 2025

Every piece that leaves our workshop starts life as raw material — a length of timber, a sheet of acrylic, a blank waiting to become something meaningful. What happens in between is equal parts technology and craft, and we thought it was time to show you inside.

The Design Stage

Before the laser fires a single pulse, we spend time on the design. Whether you've sent us a custom message, a name, or a date, we set it in our design software, choosing a typeface that suits the piece and the occasion. This stage is where the work is really done — getting the spacing right, the weight of the letters balanced against the material.

Laser Engraving

Our CO₂ laser engraver is our workhorse. Controlled by LightBurn, it traces the design at high speed, burning the pattern into the material with precision we couldn't achieve by hand. The smell of fresh-cut timber and scorched acrylic has become the scent of our studio — you either love it or you don't, and we definitely love it.

Finishing

After engraving, each piece is cleaned, inspected under a lamp, and — where needed — sanded and oiled. It's the finishing that separates a nice piece from a great one. We don't rush this stage.

If you've ever wondered what goes into the keepsake you ordered, now you know. Every one is made the same way: by hand, with care, in a small workshop in Ireland.
